Having studied Eng Lit, I remember very well how much time and effort goes into textual analysis, even when it's a body of work you love.

It's funny, because while Galaxy has happy connotations for me, that's primarily for reasons other than the lyrics.

I never regarded it as a happy song in that context (though also not exactly a sad song either. For me, it's a song about wishing you could live life fast and hard and happy without having to stop to smell the coffee... even though you really can't, because just like in Cinderella, at some metaphorical midnight, the dream has to end. For me that's just plain honest, and the music fits the theme, so I don't mind that it always makes me smile.Mawbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12688827578326331314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8994365939017837190.post-4630969157692930142012-10-22T22:35:32.468+09:002012-10-22T22:35:32.468+09:00@ Mimi - The Japanese fans do. I've always thought that the people who find Sakurai's lyrics too repetitive and immature are kind of missing the point, but I could have never explained it so thoroughly. The deceptive simplicity of their lyrics is one of the reasons I love BT. Really a great post =)

Just a small, insignificant clarification: Sakurai was indeed beaten by his father as a boy. He clearly says so in this interview ("when I did bad things in senior high, he'd burn me with his cigarette and hit me until my face was swollen"): http://www.nopperabou.net/bt-interviews/bt-inter/snob-ja2005.htm. And the kinda-positive-songs-that-are-also-dark are the ones I find most comforting. (The balanced "light can't exist without darkness" thing blah blah blah.) Overly-happy songs may entertain me while in a good mood, but, like you said, they don't really help someone who's slipping into a depression.

Anyway, I'll definitely be looking forward to future articles. But when I read the translation, I concluded definitely it isn't completely a happy bright song. So when other fans comment, "Oooh a very 360 degree turn of BT for making a Happy pop song", I kinda give them an eyebrow raise. lol

On another note, I think Sakurai mentioned once in a magazine interview back in 2005 that his father would punch his face until it's all bloody. He still went to school the day after the beating. I think that was when he was in high school...
Mimihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18204559090206206151noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8994365939017837190.post-9267668141695700302012-10-21T13:59:46.713+09:002012-10-21T13:59:46.713+09:00One thing I forgot to mention is that I will now b...One thing I forgot to mention is that I will now be listening to songs I couldn't listen to for auditory reasons, in an attempt to connect with them on the basis of other merits. :)ScarUponTheSkynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8994365939017837190.post-60330017053293276502012-10-21T13:38:31.415+09:002012-10-21T13:38:31.415+09:00This article is amazing! So thank you for your work and insights into the inside& outside of Mr Sakurai's dark goth and brilliant room(s).

It sort of surprises me that people took as a 100% happy-go-lucky song.It sounds happier that other songs, that's true. But to me it's always felt like it goes faster and faster, and the whole midnight image feels agonizing. To me it brings forward the idea of finding at least smth to pull yourself back together and get ready to heads up even though you're scarred and cut into tiny little pieces inside ...but maybe that's what I needed to find in it. [have to admit, I've relied on it on repeat mode more than a couple of times]

As for your use of 'complicated' English words, well the twists of your phrases are half the fun of reading the posts :) Word out to 'newer' readers. In reference to my last comment about how personal experience reveals another facade of BT song, it couldn't be anymore extreme than the way it was three days ago. I was deeply depressed as my brother is currently in induced coma after a major brain surgery. The news is hard to digest and I couldn't find consolation in anything, until I listen to Serenade-Itoshi no Umbrella. What used to be a romantic and make-me-feel-so-giddy song, suddenly becomes a very comforting song. With your translation, the song in repeat slowly pull me out of depression and Memento Mori force me to face the fact of inevitable death and the nature of life.
