At the Night Side Live Report

Cayce's live report of At the Night Side 2012 is now up over at Not Greatest Site, so what are you waiting for, go read it!

Also, some videos from the livestream broadcast are also up, at least for now.  Not to rain on y'alls parade (hah hah hah I'm going to make that joke as many times as I possibly can), but after watching a few of them I can say that sadly, they don't capture the reality of the experience at all.  For one thing, Imai's suit was waaay more purple than that in real life.  Whoops, I mean "eggplant."  For another thing, Mr. Sakurai didn't look nearly so heroine-angel dust mixed-out in real life as he does in this video.

The moral of the story?  Technology is not a replacement for real life.  Put down your phones and walk around the world, people.  What makes for great livejournal entries is Real Life.  End of story.  Perhaps you can't make it to Japan, in which case, it's wonderful that you were able to see Buck-Tick's webcast.  But lots of people in Japan can't make it to your country either, and your country surely has lovely rainstorms and beautiful flowers aplenty.  So go outside and feel grateful to be alive.  Smell, taste, listen.  And put down the phone.

  1. Ahhh, I've been waiting for this report and checking every day. Before I go read it though... I didn't watch the Nico broadcast because hey, I'm going to see them in the flesh (no rude jokes please) in under a month and anticipation is best stoked by deprivation. Also I want to spend that 2500 yen on merch :P

Still though, I'm glad they did the simulcast - for the fans in Japan who couldn't make it as much as those outside. And I hope it made them some money they can plough back into Lingua Sounda that they would not have had otherwise. Sakamoto Ryuichi often broadcasts his concerts (usually for free) and I have enjoyed those in the past - I like to see bands experimenting with new technology and giving people the chance to at least experience something in real time, even if it's not quite the same as being there.

  2. What, no comments on the review? Then allow me to do so, at the risk of being accused of being a suck-up. Great review as always - I continue to be somewhat in awe of the amount of detail you can remember and recount, and never fail appreciate the wit you bring to the prose.

And I hope you don't mind me observing that Watching some of the clips in conjunction with your review actually ^does^ almost feel like I was there. Such is the power of well-written descriptive prose.

Also Mr Sakurai's remarks about getting hot and wet reminded me of one of my old, favourite lewd remarks about preferring my men the same way I prefer my tea, and that made me laugh out loud.

  4. Like Mawb, I'm impressed with your attention to details. The way your report written makes me feel the concert vibe. I don't know if that makes sense. I guess all your BT live report do that to me. The goosebumps and all.

Watching the concert, I couldn't help feeling so proud to be a fan of such an amazing band. To think that they were so poor that they used to share takoyaki after live show to bigger and bigger concert. I'm so proud to be their fan.
