Mystery Moon
Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi
Music: Hoshino Hidehiko

Never ending dream where I met you
Halfway through
You and I we are the lovers
Wanderin’ thru the darkness

Frolickin’ thru the nameless stardust crumbs, tryin’ to count them
You and I we are the travelers
Driftin’ thru the shadow

Your eyes so blue like lapis-lazuli
Just looking in them I’m crumbling down

Mystery moonlight prowlin’ alone, you’re dancing
Yeah, lickin’ your pretty lips red as ruby
Overflowing, dripping all your blood and all your tears love
Every one of them is mine, all mine yeah

Sayin’ goodbye, the sweetest thing you know
And you know it’s true
And finally all that’s left within us
Is our last promise

Your eyes so blue like lapis-lazuli
Just holding you close I’m crumbling down

Mystery moonlight prowlin’ together dancing
Yeah, tastin’ your pretty lips red as ruby
Overflowing, dripping all my blood and all my tears love
Every one of them is yours, all yours yeah

Mystery moonlight prowlin’ together dancing
Yeah, kissin’ your pretty lips red as ruby
Overflowing, all the blood and tears that make forever
Maybe they’re someone else’s now
No, I don’t know
There and gone
I don’t know
There and gone...

This English translation can be sung with the song's original melody! In addition to the obvious blues/jazz influences, something about it makes me think of Appalachian folk songs and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" (am I the only one?) Stylistic additions (i.e. apostrophes) added accordingly. Also please note that though I took some liberties with the presentation, this translation is still as accurate meaning-wise as it would have been if I'd written a straight version.

  1. Lol! Appalachia is where my family hails! You're absolutely right that this has... some quality about it that reminds me of that kind of music in a way...

Thank you for the translation, Cayce!

  5. Thanks a lot for this translation! I think I too may try a close reading of this song to see how it sounds without the english matching the Japanese beat. I trust your translation is perfectly accurate of course! ^_^ ...I'm just curious.

  6. Actually it (the translation) really is just about 100% word-for-word literal. I just added the apostrophes and such to give it a folk-song kind of vibe because the music made me think of that style and I thought it would be fun to write the translation like that.
