寿記 12.09.2010 TV 1

.

Yesterday, I got filmed for TV.

.

They called me in as "special guest Imai Hisashi."

.

I was anticipating that the content of the program would make this experience special fun, but...

.

It ended up being way more fun than I even expected, in a sort of unexpected way.

.

It was hilarious!

寿記 10.09.2010 Comics: Muu-tachi

.

I think I've read it at least 20 times.

.

.

Muu-tachi. It's a two-volume series by Enomoto Shunji. (I really wanted him to make it more like 5 volumes.)

.

The story mostly revolves around two characters: the father Minoru, and his middle-school-age son Muu.

.

.

Mmm...i wonder if you could call this manga "metaphysical."

.

.

There's a weird art museum...

.

.

A sort of joyful sense of wandering through a creepy, surreal dreamscape...

.

.

If you stop paying attention

.

.

The art sneaks up behind you.

.

.

For me, it's the same sort of pleasure I get from the work of De Chirico, Dali, or Escher.

.

.

The first time I read it...

.

.

I kept thinking "what do I call this feeling...?"

.

.

And then...

.

.

I felt "nostalgic" for a manga artist for the first time...

.

.

I thought, "yeah, that's it!"

.

.

A weird, sort of helpless homesickness....

.

.

It's present throughout the whole manga.

.

.

I love the feeling it gives me.

.

.

.

.

It's wonderful the way the father Minoru just interacts with his son Muu in his own strange, unique way, without ever denying or scolding.

.

Also, you can recognize Minoru immediately after seeing even one panel.

.

.

It's a great manga for those long autumn nights that will be coming soon.

.

(I wonder, will he ever write a sequel?)

.

New Shiki Theme

According to the Sony official website, Mana Mary Sue Wakeshima Kanon will be teaming up with An Cafe twinkie Kanon to form the horror-rock duo kanon x kanon. Horror rock, because it's horrifying. And as befitting horror-rock, the duo's debut single, entitled "Calendula Requiem," will be used as the opening theme for the most popular horror anime on Japanese TV--yes, that's right, it's going to replace "Kuchizuke" as the opening theme for our own dear Shiki.

I guess they couldn't have Buck-Tick do the ending and the opening themes simultaneously, but all I can say is, come on, guys, seriously?

And do these campers look happy, I ask you?

Oh, and if you haven't watched Shiki yet, please don't let An Cafe boys and strawberry-licking lolitas stop you from watching it. Watch it I tell you! Alone in a dark room, preferably. It is a delicious creepfest and more than worth your time and nightmares.

Mystery Moon
Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi
Music: Hoshino Hidehiko

Never ending dream where I met you
Halfway through
You and I we are the lovers
Wanderin’ thru the darkness

Frolickin’ thru the nameless stardust crumbs, tryin’ to count them
You and I we are the travelers
Driftin’ thru the shadow

Your eyes so blue like lapis-lazuli
Just looking in them I’m crumbling down

Mystery moonlight prowlin’ alone, you’re dancing
Yeah, lickin’ your pretty lips red as ruby
Overflowing, dripping all your blood and all your tears love
Every one of them is mine, all mine yeah

Sayin’ goodbye, the sweetest thing you know
And you know it’s true
And finally all that’s left within us
Is our last promise

Your eyes so blue like lapis-lazuli
Just holding you close I’m crumbling down

Mystery moonlight prowlin’ together dancing
Yeah, tastin’ your pretty lips red as ruby
Overflowing, dripping all my blood and all my tears love
Every one of them is yours, all yours yeah

Mystery moonlight prowlin’ together dancing
Yeah, kissin’ your pretty lips red as ruby
Overflowing, all the blood and tears that make forever
Maybe they’re someone else’s now
No, I don’t know
There and gone
I don’t know
There and gone...

This English translation can be sung with the song's original melody! In addition to the obvious blues/jazz influences, something about it makes me think of Appalachian folk songs and Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Bad Moon Rising" (am I the only one?) Stylistic additions (i.e. apostrophes) added accordingly. Also please note that though I took some liberties with the presentation, this translation is still as accurate meaning-wise as it would have been if I'd written a straight version.

Kiss
Lyrics: Sakurai Atsushi
Music: Imai Hisashi

I love you…could I say I love you?
Shut your mouth, close your eyes
To the kiss of my sin

I love you…I’m sure I love you
Close my eyes, piercing your throat
With the kiss of my sin

I can never go back
But it’s fine by me
Gazing deep in the night
Drinking down the wine

I love you…I love you more and more
Driven mad by a vicious thirst
Close your eyes to the kiss of my sin

Driven mad by your scent
Waking deep in the night
Drinking love and lunacy

Come into my arms…that darkness is bitter
You’re bewitched yet you waver
Come, be now forever…this darkness is sweet
I’ll pierce you so deep

Driven mad by your scent
Waking deep in the night
Drinking love and lunacy

Come into my arms…that darkness is bitter
You’re bewitched yet you waver
Come, be now forever…this darkness is sweet
I’ll pierce you so deep

Come into my arms…that darkness is bitter
You’re smiling a little
This will make you forever…this darkness is sweet
I’ll pierce you so deep

Note: The lines in the chorus "that darkness is bitter/this darkness is sweet" are a reference to a Japanese folk song called "Hotaru Koi" ("Come, Firefly"). The original song goes, "Come, firefly/Over there the water is bitter/Over here the water is sweet." Also not to come across as rude, but the translation of this song that appeared in the fan-subbed version of the Shiki anime was wildly inaccurate, so please put it out of your minds.

P.S. For what it's worth, Cayce is translating professionally these days, but this translation is a free gift of love.

There are a lot of references in these titles, but it's hard to know the intended meaning without actually listening to the songs...so let's all wait and see, shall we.

As an added bonus, "Queen of the Night" will be featured as the new ending theme for the Shiki anime. A wise choise, considering that the current ending theme, while a pleasing song in its own right, has approximately nothing to do with the content of the series.

Oh, and the album artwork has been released. It should excite you, if miniature pixelated icons turn you on.
