A review of Buck-Tick 2 : Can't Stop the Phenomenon is now up at NGS! Please comment or I'll regret having spent so much time writing the damn thing. Oh yeah and for the record, it's not perfect, but I'll be going to see this one again, too, before it leaves the theater. Not perfect doesn't mean, not a lot of fun.
Review here.
Cayce,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your wonderful review of the movie. I have the ATNS DVD from 2003. Though I do not understand Japanese, I really enjoyed the dvd because it showed us what goes behind the scene when they are touring. I hope they come out with a dvd for the movie bc it would be wonderful to see what that part of their life. Thank you for your hard work.
First of all, thank you very much for your intensive review. Also, checking out your blog has now become a part of my daily routine. I always enjoy reading what you write :)
ReplyDeleteAbout the movie, if they don't release a DVD/BD for it, I'm so gonna cry my guts out. Knowing that they have produced a kind of artistic movie (which is what I expected, indeed) makes me feel even more enthusiastic for it.
Thank you for the film reviews, Cayce. Did you get any indication why they called the second song STEPPERS-parade?? When I look up "steppers" I found that it's a kind of dance form, either African-American or Irish (as in step-dancing). Of course it might be a totally unrelated reference. Any spoilers on the lyrics and/or music style? :)
ReplyDeleteMan, you ought to know Imai well enough by now to know that you shouldn't set too much store by his English! I'm gonna slap you with the hashtag #thinkingtoohard. "Steppers" is just a literal translation of the word "fumu," which can mean "to step on" but in this case means "to march." It appears several times in the lyrics.
DeleteAs for song spoilers...did you read the review to the end? This is what I wrote:
"True to the second film’s focus on the festival and live tour, “Steppers –Parade–” is a rousing singalong up-tempo number that sounds like the chain-smoking older brother of “Climax Together”—it’s just as feel-good classic retro, but a little rougher around the edges. If “Love Parade” was the daytime song, “Steppers” is the nighttime song, and though it probably won’t make you teary like “Love Parade” did, but I’ll have you know that Sakurai does sing the word “sexy,” multiple times."
Yes I read the whole thing, but, like always, I want MOWWAR!! haha. *waits patiently along with everyone else* :)
DeleteThanks Cayce for the post and the wonderful reviews of the Buck Tick movies. Just wanted to let you know how much that is appreciated!
ReplyDeleteI am keeping fingers crossed it won't be too long before these movies are released in DVDs. Then I will have your reviews to read again while watching the movies!
Glad you all enjoyed the review. I'm very sure the movie will come out on DVD, so you'll get to enjoy it yourselves sooner or later!
ReplyDeleteCayce!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
Review is great as usual!
Looking forward for more works of yours and B-T!

I enjoyed both songs, too! That Steppers song is catchy :). And all in all, I´d say the second film was way funnier. It had a different atmosphere than the first one!
ReplyDeleteToo bad they will probably never reveal any of the Atsushi-Issay stuff, thoguh. Despite that little bit of hope I had, I knew that they never would :p.
Thanks for the reviews. I gotta be honest, although both movies sounds interesting, it lacks the personality the previous movies had. And I hope they're not too Sakurai-centric, I really like the guy but I really want to see the other guys shine a bit.
ReplyDeleteWell, if you haven't seen them yet, you don't know if they lack personality or not, now do you? A review isn't meant to be a substitute for the actual work.
DeleteYou're right, A review doesn't say all there is too say. But you did point out some of the things I was feeling was missing at the end of the second review.
DeleteBut unless you've seen the movie, you don't actually have any idea what's missing, you just know what I personally think is missing. You can't talk about the movie like you've seen it because you haven't seen it yet.
DeleteHave you ever read a review on a movie or game and got a visual idea about it? That's what I mean. When I read the review I got a visual of what I think it's about, once I see it it may be what I was thinking, it may be something completely different. All of this is preliminary thoughts. You paint a really good picture of the movie and it got me thinking and comparing to others (Not fair I know but, I can't help my wandering mind.)I do see where I made the mistake in my first post, I am sorry about that. I didn't mean to sit in judgement of the movie, I was just expressing some thoughts.
DeleteThanks for the review~! It helps for those who will never have the chance to watch it in the theater. :)
